A name change and an EIN change are two different situations on Form 2290. Sorting out which one you have keeps your return from being rejected.

If your business name changed

The name on Form 2290 must match what the IRS has tied to your EIN, exactly. So update the name with the IRS first, then file. The IRS confirms a name change with its own process, often using the CP 575 EIN notice or a later confirmation letter. Once the IRS shows the new name, your return will clear.

If you have a new EIN

A new legal entity gets a new EIN, and you file Form 2290 under that new number. Remember a brand new EIN can take about two weeks to become active in the IRS e-file system, so apply early enough that it works before your deadline.

Avoiding the mismatch rejection

The single most common rejection is a business name that does not match the EIN. Double check the spelling and spacing against your IRS paperwork before you transmit.
