Three IFTA rules that save carriers money

File every quarter, even with zero miles — a missed zero-return triggers the same penalties as a missed real one. Keep mileage by jurisdiction — ELD or GPS exports plus fuel receipts make the return mechanical. Don't confuse IFTA with IRP — one settles fuel taxes, the other registration fees. IFTA quarterly filing deadlines

The International Fuel Tax Agreement, or IFTA, is separate from Form 2290, but carriers who run in more than one state file it every quarter. This tracker shows the due dates, and here is how the quarterly schedule works.

The four quarterly deadlines

  • First quarter, January through March, is due April 30.
  • Second quarter, April through June, is due July 31.
  • Third quarter, July through September, is due October 31.
  • Fourth quarter, October through December, is due January 31.

How IFTA differs from Form 2290

IFTA reports the fuel tax you owe based on the miles you drive in each state and is filed quarterly with your base jurisdiction. Form 2290 is the once a year federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax. Most interstate carriers deal with both, along with IRP apportioned registration.
