USDOT Number: Registration & Requirements

General information for motor carriers · Not legal advice.

A USDOT number is a unique identifier issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). It tracks a carrier's safety record through inspections, audits, crash investigations, and compliance reviews. For many operators it is the first registration you need before you can legally run.

Who Needs a USDOT Number?

You generally need one if you operate in interstate commerce and your vehicle/operation involves any of the following:

  • A gross vehicle weight rating of 10,001 lbs or more
  • Transporting hazardous materials in placardable quantities
  • Carrying 8 or more passengers for compensation, or 15 or more not for compensation

Many states also require a USDOT number for intrastate operations — check your state's rules.

USDOT vs. MC Authority

A USDOT number is your safety identifier. An MC number (operating authority) is your permission to operate as a for-hire carrier of regulated goods across state lines. Depending on what and how you haul, you may need both. Carriers that haul for others also need the right for hire tags.

Keeping It Active: The MCS-150

You must file the MCS-150 update at least every two years (the biennial update), even with no changes. Skipping it can deactivate your USDOT number and put you out of service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who needs a USDOT number?

You generally need a USDOT number if you operate a commercial vehicle in interstate commerce with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more, transport hazardous materials in quantities requiring placarding, or carry 8+ passengers (for compensation) or 15+ passengers (not for compensation). Many states also require a USDOT number for intrastate carriers.

How much does a USDOT number cost?

Registering for a USDOT number directly with the FMCSA is free. Consulics can prepare and file the registration for you to ensure it is done correctly.

What is the difference between a USDOT number and an MC number?

A USDOT number identifies your company for safety records and is used by the FMCSA to monitor inspections and audits. An MC (operating authority) number is the permission to operate as a for-hire carrier of regulated commodities across state lines. Many carriers need both.

Do I have to update my USDOT registration?

Yes. You must update your information by filing the MCS-150 at least every two years (biennial update), even if nothing has changed, or your USDOT number can be deactivated.
