IRS Form 2290 Instructions (2026–2027)

A complete, step-by-step guide to preparing, calculating, and filing your Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax return.

Quick Answer: Form 2290 Instructions

IRS Form 2290 instructions require any motor carrier or owner-operator registering a commercial vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more to file an annual Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) return. Filers need an active EIN, vehicle VINs, and gross weight categories. Returns are due August 31 for July vehicles, or the last day of the month following first highway use. E-filing returns an IRS-stamped Schedule 1 in minutes.

Before You Begin: Required Information

Filing IRS Form 2290 is mandatory for anyone who registers a heavy highway motor vehicle in their name with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. For a full overview of the form, who must file, and flat-rate pricing, learn how to e-file IRS Form 2290 online. To file successfully, you will need to gather three specific pieces of information beforehand:

1. Your Business EIN

Your Employer Identification Number. The IRS strictly prohibits filing with a personal Social Security Number (SSN). See our EIN guide.

2. 17-Digit VINs

The 17-character Vehicle Identification Number for each truck. Verify formatting beforehand using our free VIN checker.

3. Taxable Gross Weight

The total weight of the truck, trailer, and maximum load. Determine your category with our weight finder.

Step-by-Step Instructions for E-Filing Form 2290

The IRS strongly encourages all taxpayers to e-file Form 2290. If you are reporting 25 or more vehicles, e-filing is legally mandatory. E-filing is the only method to receive your stamped Schedule 1 in minutes rather than weeks.

1

Create Your Business Entity Profile

Enter your business name, address, and EIN exactly as they appear on your official IRS Letter CP575 or Form 147C. If operating as a sole proprietor, enter your legal surname. If your EIN is newly issued, wait approximately 10 to 14 business days for the IRS Modernized e-File system to replicate your record.

2

Select the Tax Year and First Used Month (FUM)

The federal HVUT tax period runs from July 1 through June 30. Select the month your vehicle first operated on public highways during this period. For vehicles operating in July, select July (tax due August 31). If purchased mid-season, the IRS prorates the tax based on the remaining months.

3

Enter Your Vehicles and Assign Weight Categories

For each vehicle, enter the 17-digit VIN and select its taxable gross weight category. If a vehicle is expected to travel 5,000 miles or less (or 7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles), designate it as a Suspended Vehicle (Category W). Zero tax is owed on suspended trucks, but you must still report them to receive a stamped Schedule 1.

IRS Taxable Gross Weight Categories

  • Category A to V: Commercial vehicles from 55,000 lbs ($100 base) up to 75,000 lbs ($22 per additional 1,000 lbs).
  • Category V: Maximum tax category for heavy trucks over 75,000 lbs ($550 per year).
  • Category W: Suspended low-mileage vehicles. Zero tax due.
4

Select Your IRS Tax Payment Method

Choose how the IRS excise tax will be settled:

  • Direct Debit / EFW: The IRS withdraws the tax directly from your commercial checking account on the date you specify.
  • EFTPS: Pay through the federal Electronic Federal Tax Payment System.
  • Credit or Debit Card: Pay via an IRS-authorized third-party card processor.
  • Check or Money Order: Mail a physical check with Form 2290-V voucher.
5

Electronically Sign and Download Stamped Schedule 1

Authorize the transmission with a 5-digit PIN and submit. Once IRS Modernized e-File validates and accepts the return (usually within 5 minutes), your digital, watermarked Schedule 1 is generated for immediate printing or state DMV registration.
