Filing the HVUT on your own truck
As an owner-operator, the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax lands squarely on you — there is no carrier handling it on your behalf. That sounds like a burden, but for a single truck the filing is quick once you know the rules: an EIN that matches your business name, the truck’s taxable gross weight, and the month it first hit the road. Get those right and your stamped Schedule 1 — the proof you need to register — comes back the same day.
One truck still means filing
Being an owner-operator does not exempt you from the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax. If a truck at 55,000 pounds or more is registered in your name, Form 2290 is required. The good news is that filing on a single vehicle is fast and inexpensive.
You need an EIN
Form 2290 is filed against an Employer Identification Number, never a Social Security number. If you are newly out on your own, get your EIN sorted first — a new one needs about two weeks before it works for e-filing.
Pay only for what you run
The tax is set by weight category and prorated when a truck enters service after July. If you bought your truck mid-period, you pay for the remaining months, not a full year — so timing matters.
Fast Schedule 1
e-Filing means the IRS usually accepts a clean return within minutes, and your stamped Schedule 1 is issued right away. That keeps your registration moving so you stay loaded and rolling.
An owner-operator filing checklist
Confirm you must file
A vehicle at 55,000 pounds or more registered in your name needs Form 2290. Under that weight, it does not — but most road tractors are over the line.
Have your EIN and exact name
Use the Employer Identification Number and the business name the IRS has on record. A mismatch is the top cause of rejection.
Know the truck’s weight category
Taxable gross weight sets the tax, generally 100 to 550 dollars a year. A weight category finder removes the guesswork.
Use the right first-use month
The month your truck first ran on public highways drives both the proration and the deadline. Pick it carefully.

Owner-operator questions, answered
Do owner-operators with one truck have to file Form 2290?
Yes. There is no small-operator exemption. If you register a highway vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more in your name, you must file Form 2290 and pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, even if you run a single truck.
Can I use my Social Security number instead of an EIN?
No. The IRS requires an Employer Identification Number for Form 2290. A Social Security number is not accepted. If you do not have an EIN yet, apply early, because a new one takes about two weeks to become active for e-filing.
How much will I owe on one truck?
The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax is based on taxable gross weight, generally from 100 dollars up to 550 dollars per year for the heaviest category. If you put the truck into service after July, the tax is prorated for the months remaining in the period.
When is my Form 2290 due as an owner-operator?
For a truck in use at the start of the period on July 1, the return is due by August 31. For a truck first used later, it is generally due by the last day of the month after the month of first use. The tax period runs July 1 through June 30.
How fast can I get my stamped Schedule 1?
When you e-file an error-free return, the IRS usually accepts it within minutes and your watermarked Schedule 1 is issued right away. That is the proof of payment you need to register or renew your plates.
