When you can claim a refund

A sold, destroyed, or stolen vehicle earns a credit for the unused part of the tax period; a vehicle that stayed under the mileage limit may recover the full tax. Learn more in our Form 2290 guide.

How Form 8849 HVUT refunds work

If you already paid the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax and then sold the truck, had it destroyed or stolen, or drove it under the mileage limit, you can claim part of that tax back. You do it on Form 8849 Schedule 6, and this calculator estimates the credit.

When you can claim a refund

  • The vehicle was sold before the tax year ended.
  • The vehicle was destroyed or stolen during the year.
  • The vehicle was driven 5,000 miles or less, or 7,500 for an agricultural vehicle, so no tax was actually owed.
  • You overpaid the HVUT or paid it on the wrong vehicle.

How the credit is figured

A refund for a sold, destroyed, or stolen truck is prorated. You get back the tax for the full months left in the tax year after the event, counted through June 30. A low mileage claim refunds the whole year of tax, but only after the tax year has ended.

Refund now or credit later

You can take the amount as a refund on Form 8849, or apply it as a credit against a new Form 2290 you are filing. Consulics covers both Form 2290 and Form 8849 under the same flat filing fee.
