Filing for one truck follows the same path as a whole fleet, just simpler. If you are an owner operator with a single rig, here is everything you need.

What you need

  • An active EIN. The IRS does not accept a Social Security Number on Form 2290, even for one truck.
  • Your Vehicle Identification Number, entered exactly.
  • Your taxable gross weight category.
  • The month you first used the truck on public highways in the period.

Filing steps

  1. 1Create your account and start a new Form 2290 return.
  2. 2Enter your business details and active EIN, with the name matching the IRS records.
  3. 3Add your one vehicle: VIN, weight category, and first used month.
  4. 4Choose how to pay any tax due, review, then transmit to the IRS.
  5. 5Download your stamped Schedule 1, usually back within minutes, and keep a copy in the cab.

Cost for one truck

You pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax that your weight category sets, plus one flat filing fee. VIN corrections on Consulics returns are free, so a single typo does not turn into another charge.
