Start E-FilingYou can ask the IRS for more time to file Form 2290, but there are two things to understand first: how to request it, and why it does not delay the tax.
How an extension works
- You ask the IRS in writing for more time to file, and you must do it before the due date.
- Send the request to the IRS address shown in the Form 2290 instructions, and explain the reason for the delay.
- An extension to file is generally for up to six months, or longer if you are living outside the country.
It does not delay the tax
An extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay. You still need to pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax by the original due date, or interest and penalties can build on the unpaid amount.
Often filing is faster than asking
Because e-file takes only minutes once your details are ready, many filers find it quicker to simply file than to write for an extension. A provider cannot grant an extension. Only the IRS can.
