Start E-FilingElectronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW), or direct debit, is the simplest way to pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax because it is built into the e-filed Form 2290. A few timing questions come up again and again, so here are plain answers.
How many days until the IRS debits an EFW payment?
When you choose EFW, you set a payment date as part of the return, and the IRS schedules the debit for that date once it accepts your Form 2290. In practice the money usually leaves your account on, or within a business day or two of, the date you chose, allowing for weekends and federal holidays. If you file close to the deadline, pick a payment date on or before the due date so the payment counts as on time.
Do I start the EFW payment on the IRS website?
No. This is the main thing that sets EFW apart from the other methods. With EFW you authorize the payment inside the e-filed return itself, so there is nothing to start separately on the IRS website. That is different from EFTPS or IRS Direct Pay, which you do start yourself on their own systems, and Direct Pay does not even accept Form 2290. With Consulics you enter your bank routing and account number while filing, and that authorization travels to the IRS with the return.
How long does the actual withdrawal take?
Once the IRS initiates the debit on your scheduled date, the transfer behaves like any ACH bank transaction and typically clears within one to two business days. If you do not see the debit within a few business days of the date you chose, check that the routing and account numbers were entered correctly, because a bad routing number is the most common reason a debit does not go through.
Do fast filing guarantees mean anything?
Some 2290 e-file providers advertise an "express guarantee," usually a promise to refund your filing fee if you do not receive your stamped Schedule 1 within a set time. It is worth reading the fine print, because no provider controls how quickly the IRS processes a return. Consulics keeps it straightforward instead: your stamped Schedule 1 is delivered as soon as the IRS accepts your return, which is usually within minutes, and every filing includes free VIN corrections and a re-file guarantee if the IRS rejects your return due to an error. We do not promise IRS processing speeds that no filer can actually control.
