How to Pay HVUT Through EFTPS

EFTPS is the free Electronic Federal Tax Payment System run by the U.S. Treasury. You schedule the HVUT payment yourself through EFTPS rather than having it pulled during the return.

Steps to pay through EFTPS

  1. 1Enroll at EFTPS well ahead of time — enrollment is not instant, because a confirmation PIN is mailed to you, which can take several business days.
  2. 2When you e-file Form 2290, select EFTPS as the payment method.
  3. 3Log in to EFTPS and schedule the payment for the correct tax period and amount.
  4. 4Keep the EFTPS confirmation number with your records.

Plan for the lead time

Because EFTPS enrollment is mailed, do not wait until your deadline to set it up. If you are close to a deadline and not yet enrolled, EFW or card payment may be faster. EFTPS is ideal for carriers and fleets who pay federal taxes regularly and want one system for all of them.
