A logging vehicle — one used exclusively to transport products harvested from the forest — is taxed at a reduced Heavy Vehicle Use Tax rate. For example, a vehicle that would otherwise owe 550 dollars owes 412.50 dollars as a logging vehicle.

Steps to file a logging vehicle

  1. 1Confirm the vehicle qualifies: it must be used exclusively to haul forest products, and it should be registered as a highway motor vehicle used in the transportation of harvested forest products.
  2. 2Start a Form 2290 return and add the vehicle by VIN and taxable gross weight category.
  3. 3Mark it as a logging vehicle so the reduced rate is applied.
  4. 4Review the lower tax, choose how to pay, transmit, and download the stamped Schedule 1.

Qualifying matters

The reduced rate applies only when the vehicle is used exclusively for logging during the period. If a truck does other hauling, it does not qualify for the logging rate. When in doubt, confirm the use with your tax professional before claiming it.
