What Does an IRS Watermarked Schedule 1 Look Like?

When you e-file Form 2290, you do not receive a physical ink stamp from the IRS. Instead, you receive an electronic "watermarked" Schedule 1. This document is the legal equivalent of a paper-stamped Schedule 1 and is accepted by all 50 state DMVs, the IRP, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Key Features of a Valid Watermarked Schedule 1

• Translucent IRS Watermark: A faint, official IRS seal is embedded into the background of the PDF, usually centered.
• E-file ERO Stamp: The text "Received [Date]" indicating exactly when the IRS accepted the electronic return.
• Your Business Information: Your legal business name and Employer Identification Number (EIN) printed at the top.
• VIN List: A complete list of all Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) declared for that tax period.

Paper Stamp vs. Digital Watermark

If you mail a paper Form 2290 to the IRS, an agent will manually stamp Schedule 1 with ink and mail it back to you. This process can take weeks. By contrast, the digital watermark is applied automatically by the IRS Modernized e-File (MeF) system as soon as the return is accepted. For this reason, e-filing is the only way to get immediate proof of payment.

It is critical to note that state DMVs are trained to recognize the official IRS watermark. Attempting to forge or alter a Schedule 1 is a federal offense and will result in immediate rejection at the registration counter.
