IRP Renewal Requirements & Form 2290
The International Registration Plan (IRP) allows commercial motor carriers to register their heavy vehicles once in their base jurisdiction, granting them the authority to travel through all other participating states and provinces. However, obtaining these apportioned plates requires strict federal compliance.
The Federal Mandate
Under federal law, no state IRP office can process an application or issue apportioned plates for a vehicle weighing 55,000 pounds or more without verified proof that the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) has been paid.
Required Proof for IRP
When you visit your base jurisdiction's IRP office (or submit an application online), you must include a copy of your IRS-stamped or watermarked Schedule 1.
Important Note: The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on your Schedule 1 must match the VIN on your IRP application perfectly. If there is a typo, the IRP office will reject your application, forcing you to file a VIN Correction with the IRS before you can get your plates.
Timing Your Renewals
Because Form 2290 is due annually by August 31, and IRP renewals often occur at different times of the year depending on your state's staggering schedule, it is critical to keep your Schedule 1 safely stored. If you misplace your paper copy, e-filing through a portal like Consulics ensures you can always log in and re-download your official PDF at any time, 24/7.
