Truck over 55,000 lbs? If your truck's taxable gross weight is 55,000 lbs or more, the IRS requires you to file Form 2290 to get a stamped Schedule 1.
How VIN Decoding Helps with Form 2290
When you e-file Form 2290, you must enter the exact 17-character VIN for each heavy vehicle in your fleet. The IRS verifies this VIN against federal databases. A typo can lead to a rejected return or a mismatch at the DMV when renewing your IRP plates.
This decoder pulls data directly from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). By decoding your VIN before filing, you can verify that the system correctly identifies your truck's make, model, and year, ensuring you haven't made a typo.
Taxable Gross Weight vs GVWR
Note that the NHTSA database returns the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). For Form 2290, the IRS uses Taxable Gross Weight, which is the empty weight of the truck plus the empty weight of the trailer, plus the maximum load customarily carried. These two numbers are related but not identical. Make sure to file based on your Taxable Gross Weight bracket.
