The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax period runs July 1 through June 30. For trucks already on the road, the 2026–27 return can be filed once the season opens on July 1, 2026, and is due by August 31, 2026. Filers who prepare a few details in June consistently avoid the two most common season headaches: IRS rejections and last-minute DMV pressure.
1. Confirm your EIN is active
You cannot file Form 2290 with a Social Security Number — the IRS requires an Employer Identification Number, and a brand-new EIN can take around two weeks to register in the IRS e-file systems. If you don't have one yet, apply now (it's free on IRS.gov) so it's ready before July. Also check that the business name you'll file under exactly matches the name attached to your EIN; name-control mismatches are a top rejection reason.
2. Verify every VIN
A single mistyped character means a Schedule 1 that doesn't match your truck — and a correction filing later. Pull each VIN from the title or door-jamb sticker (not from memory), and run it through a VIN checker to catch transposed characters before you file.

Your tax is set by the taxable gross weight: the truck's unloaded weight, plus the unloaded weight of trailers customarily used with it, plus the maximum load customarily carried. That total places you in IRS category A through V — from $100 at 55,000 lbs up to the $550 maximum above 75,000 lbs.
4. Pick your IRS payment method now
You can pay by direct debit (EFW) when you file, through EFTPS, by card, or by mailing a check with the payment voucher. EFTPS requires enrollment in advance, so if that's your preference, set it up before the rush.
5. Don't wait for August
The IRS systems and every e-file provider are busiest in the final week of August. Filing in July gets you the same stamped Schedule 1, valid for the entire tax period, without the queue — and your DMV, IRP office, and insurance carrier will all ask for it sooner than you think.
