How to File Form 2290 for a Newly Purchased Truck

When you put a newly purchased truck into service, you do not wait until next July to file. You file Form 2290 for that truck based on the month you first drive it on a public highway, and the tax is prorated for the months left in the tax period.

Steps to file for a new truck

1. Identify the first used month — the month the truck first travels on a public highway.
2. Note your deadline: the last day of the month after that first used month (a truck first used in October is due by November 30).
3. Start a Form 2290 return in Consulics and add the truck by VIN and taxable gross weight category.
4. The prorated tax is calculated automatically for the remaining months; choose how to pay and transmit.
5. Download the stamped Schedule 1 and use it to register the new truck.

Why proration matters

A truck added mid-period costs less than one carried from July, because you pay only for the months it is in service during the period. Filing on time for the new unit keeps its registration clean from day one.
