e-File Form 2290 NowIf you expect a truck to travel 5,000 miles or less during the tax period (7,500 miles or less for an agricultural vehicle), you report it as a suspended vehicle, known as Category W. You still file Form 2290, but no tax is due, and you still receive a stamped Schedule 1 listing the vehicle.
Steps to file a suspended vehicle
- 1Start a Form 2290 return in Consulics and add the vehicle by VIN.
- 2Mark it as a suspended vehicle (Category W) instead of choosing a taxable weight category.
- 3Confirm no tax is due for that vehicle and transmit the return.
- 4Download the stamped Schedule 1 — the suspended vehicle is listed and accepted for registration.
Watch the mileage all year
Filing as suspended is a forecast, not a guarantee. If the truck later crosses the mileage limit, the tax becomes due and you must report it. Keep an eye on borderline units so a busy month does not catch you off guard.
