e-File Form 2290 NowQuick answer
The Georgia Trucking Portal is the Department of Revenue system for IRP registration, permits and CVIEW. New IRP accounts go through Georgia EZ IRP, and IFTA is handled separately on the Georgia Tax Center. Which one you use depends on weight and whether you leave the state: under 26,000 pounds and Georgia only means your county tag office instead.
Georgia spreads motor carrier work across more systems than most states, and the usual mistake is queueing at the wrong one. Everything runs through the Department of Revenue, but which door you use depends on how heavy the truck is and whether it ever crosses the state line.
Here is the map before the detail. The Georgia Trucking Portal handles IRP registration and permits. Georgia EZ IRP is the front door for brand new IRP accounts. The Georgia Tax Center, usually shortened to GTC, handles IFTA. And your county tag office handles a surprising amount of it.
Where your truck actually gets registered
Georgia defines a commercial vehicle as any vehicle weighing 10,001 pounds or more, which is a lower bar than most people expect. From there the routing is straightforward once you know it:
- Titles for all commercial vehicles are applied for at the county tag office where the business is located or the individual resides. That one has no exceptions based on weight.
- Travels only in Georgia and operating under 26,000 pounds? Register at your county tag office.
- Travels outside Georgia and operating at 26,001 pounds or over? Register online at the Georgia Trucking Portal. These vehicles have to be registered for both IRP and IFTA.
Neither door collects your federal tax
Georgia registers the truck. The IRS taxes it. File Form 2290 with Consulics and get your stamped Schedule 1 back the same day.
e-File Form 2290 NowIRP registrations cannot be done at a counter
This is the detail worth carrying with you. Georgia states plainly that IRP registrations cannot be processed at the Southmeadow MVD office or at county tag offices. Apportioned registration is an online transaction through the Trucking Portal, full stop.
If you are opening a new IRP account, Georgia routes you through EZ IRP rather than the ordinary portal login. Applications for new IRP accounts have had to go through EZ IRP since July 2023, and the older email based process was only kept alive for applications already in flight at the time.
Existing accounts renew through the portal, and Georgia schedules renewals by business name or owner last name rather than by a single statewide date, so do not assume your renewal window matches another carrier's.
IFTA lives somewhere else entirely
Fuel tax does not run through the Trucking Portal. It runs through the Georgia Tax Center, and it has its own calendar that catches people out every winter:
- Renewal season opens 1 October.
- Your IFTA decal expires 31 December.
- IFTA, Inc. grants an extension allowing the updated decal to go on the truck no later than 28 February, which is a grace period for displaying it, not a licence to skip the renewal.
- If an account is terminated for non renewal, you log into GTC and submit a reinstatement request rather than starting a fresh account.
Your other renewal has a different clock
The IFTA decal runs to December. The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax year runs July to June. File Form 2290 with Consulics and get your stamped Schedule 1 today.
e-File Form 2290 NowDo you need IFTA if you never leave Georgia?
No. Georgia answers this directly in its own FAQ: trucks that never leave the state do not need to be registered for IFTA. There are still Georgia motor fuel obligations to understand, but the interstate fuel tax agreement is not one of them.
That is the same logic running through the whole system. IFTA exists to settle fuel tax between jurisdictions, so a truck that only ever burns Georgia fuel on Georgia roads has nothing to apportion. Our guide to interstate against intrastate rules covers where that line falls, and how to avoid an IFTA audit covers the records side once you do qualify.
How this connects to Form 2290
It does not, except at the one point where it matters most. No Georgia system files your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, because it is federal and it goes to the IRS.
Where the two meet is registration. Before Georgia will register a heavy vehicle it has to see proof the federal tax was paid, and that proof is your stamped Schedule 1. Notice how the thresholds stack up, because this is where people get caught: Georgia calls a truck commercial at 10,001 pounds, routes it to the Trucking Portal at 26,001 pounds, and the IRS wants Form 2290 at 55,000 pounds. Three different numbers, three different consequences.
If you are unsure which apply to a given truck, run it through do I need to file 2290 and check the weight with the category finder.

e-File Form 2290 NowKey takeaways
- Georgia Trucking Portal handles IRP and permits. EZ IRP opens new IRP accounts. GTC handles IFTA.
- Commercial starts at 10,001 pounds in Georgia, but the Trucking Portal threshold is 26,001 pounds plus interstate travel.
- Titles always go through the county tag office, whatever the weight.
- IRP cannot be processed at a county tag office or at Southmeadow.
- IFTA renewal opens 1 October, the decal expires 31 December, with display allowed until 28 February.
- None of it files your Form 2290.
The bottom line
Georgia is not harder than other states, it is just more divided. Knowing whether a truck belongs at the county tag office or on the Trucking Portal saves the wasted trip, and knowing that IFTA sits on a completely separate system saves the winter scramble.
Georgia procedures and dates change, so confirm the current position with the Georgia Department of Revenue before acting on anything here. The federal filing does not change with the state, and the stamped Schedule 1 it produces is what every one of these registrations ultimately waits on.
