How to Get Apportioned (IRP) Plates with Your Schedule 1

Carriers who operate across state lines register under the International Registration Plan (IRP) and carry apportioned plates. Before your base jurisdiction issues those plates, it must confirm the federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax — which means your stamped Schedule 1 is required here too.

Steps to use your Schedule 1 for IRP

1. 1File Form 2290 and download the stamped Schedule 1 for the current period.
2. 2Open or renew your apportioned account with your base jurisdiction's IRP office.
3. 3Provide the stamped Schedule 1 along with your mileage and account information.
4. 4The base jurisdiction issues your apportioned plates once the tax is confirmed.

IRP renewal and the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax move together each year, so have a current Schedule 1 in hand before you renew. Letting the tax lapse can stall your apportioned registration when you need the truck working.
