Yes. Form 2290 is an annual tax. The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax period runs July 1 through June 30, so you file again each year for every taxable vehicle you still operate, even when nothing has changed. For a vehicle you run the whole period, the renewal is due by August 31.
Yes. Form 2290 is not a one-time filing — the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax renews every tax period. Each period runs from July 1 through June 30, and for every qualifying vehicle still in service you file again and receive a fresh stamped Schedule 1 that covers the new period.
Why it renews each year
Your stamped Schedule 1 is valid for one tax period only. When a new period opens, the previous Schedule 1 no longer proves current payment, and states want to see a current one to register or renew your plates. So the federal tax and your registration both run on a yearly cycle that you keep current by re-filing.
How to renew your Form 2290
- 1When the new period opens in July, file Form 2290 for every vehicle still in service.
- 2For trucks already in use at the start of the period, the first used month is July, so the deadline is August 31.
- 3Pay any tax due and download the new stamped Schedule 1 for the period.
- 4Use the new Schedule 1 for any registration or apportioned-plate renewal that comes up.
What changes from one year to the next
- Trucks added during the year are filed when first used, not held until July.
- Trucks sold, destroyed, or retired drop off — and may be eligible for a credit or refund.
- A vehicle whose taxable gross weight changed moves to the correct category.
- Low-mileage trucks can be filed as suspended again if you expect them to stay under the limit.
Renewal made easier
Because the deadline is the same every year, you can get ahead by pre-filing as soon as the next period is available, rather than waiting for the August rush. Keeping last year's records organized also makes each renewal faster, since your vehicle list and EIN carry over. Note that HVUT renewal (federal) and state registration renewal are two different things on related schedules — staying current on the federal filing keeps the state side unblocked.
